What is DEM Analytics?

VNIS DEM Analytics is a collection of interactive and easily visualizable charts that provides insight into how well is the performance of your Multi CDN strategy for a given region. It also provides insights on which of the CDN in your Multi CDN stock is used more often by your actual users.

These insights will guide you in creating better routing policies to optimize your Multi CDN strategy. It will also guide you in managing the CDNs in their Multi CDN stock.

You can access DEM analytics by navigating to ‘ Analytics’ > ‘DEM’.

You need to set the target domain from the ‘ Operation level panel’.

DEM Analytics has 3 sets of charts:

  1. Performance chart
  2. Availability chart
  3. Decisions chart

Performance chart

You can access the performance chart by clicking the ‘Performance’ tab.

This chart shows the real-time performance of the “chosen” CDN (from all your activated CDNs) at a given period of time and specific region.

The “chosen CDN” within the chart may be different at any given point. This is because the Smart Load Balancer usually switches to the best CDN at any given time. See illustration below.

Performance data is presented by plotting latency (or RTT) in milliseconds vs. time for a specific region. The default chart shows the latency data of “chosen CDN” for the last 7 days, and the region is selected based on the user’s most active countries..

You can choose the data source from optimized CDN data and optimized website data. (This will be described chart controls section).

Availability chart

You can access the availability chart by clicking the ‘Availability’ tab.

This chart shows the real-time availability of the “chosen” CDN (from all your activated CDNs) at a given period of time and specific region.

The “chosen CDN” within the chart may be different at any given point. This is because the Smart Load Balancer usually switches to the best CDN at any given time.

Availability data is presented by plotting availability (or uptime) in percent vs. time for a specific region. The default chart shows the availability data of “chosen CDN” for the last 7 days, and the region is selected based on the user’s most active countries.

You can choose the data source from optimized CDN data and optimized website data. (This will be described chart controls section).

Decisions chart

You can access the decisions chart by clicking the ‘Decisions’ tab.

This chart shows the real-time CDN optimization decision (from all your activated CDNs) at a given period of time and specific region. Optimization is the process (performed by the Smart Load Balancer) of choosing the best CDN in a given region.

Decisions data is presented by plotting the total times the CDN has been chosen vs. time. The default chart shows the decisions data of “chosen CDN” for the last 7 days.

Chart Controls

Date range: You can specify the range of the date of the DNS Analytics chart by accessing the date range on the top right of the chart.

The chart will display data for 7 days (1 week) range by default, but you can set the date range from 1 day to 30 days (1 month).

Refresh chart: You can refresh and update the chart by clicking the ‘Refresh’ icon on top of the chart.

Data presentation: You can plot data of Global and China DNS requests separately (i.e. Divide) or plot data of all DNS requests additively (i.e. Summary).

Data source: You can select the data source of your analytics chart to either Optimized CDN data, or to Optimized website data.

  • Optimized CDN data provides the static performance and availability data of the best CDN (among all the user’s activated CDNs, both managed and custom CDNs) at a given time.
  • Optimized website data provides the dynamic performance and availability data of your website going through the best CDN at a given time.

You need to install 'Beacon code' to acquire optimized website data via RUM. Follow this article to learn more about the Beacon code.
If all your CDNs are disabled, optimized website data can still provide performance and availability data but without going through any CDNs.

Quick Actions

Together with Quick Actions, DEM Analytics not only gives users visual actionable insights but also easily guides users to the next possible actions to take right after analyzing the insights.

Users can easily set routing strategies, avail of other CDNs, install private beacon, etc. based on the actionable insights they got from the analytics.
